Volvo Xc40 Recharge – Volvo

Volvo Xc40 Recharge – Volvo – “What we have here is a sensible family car that – in twin engine form – runs like clockwork.”

Volvo’s first fully electric car, three years after the XC40 petrol-powered small SUV was launched in 2017. It competes with BMW iX3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Skoda Enyaq iV, Nissan Ariya and various others. Oh, and the Polestar 2, with which it shares a platform and powertrains.

It was expensive at first, but things have improved a bit with the introduction of single-engined cars (as opposed to the more advanced twin-engined version) which now start in the £47k range.

Volvo Xc40 Recharge: What Infotainment Features Do You Get?

The XC40 is designed from the ground up to be electric, so it doesn’t suffer from the usual compromises that can occur due to DNA cross-contamination. It probably doesn’t feel special enough inside to justify the price tag its fancy electric tech commands, but to be fair to Volvo, there’s plenty of standard equipment to make you feel better inside.

The XC40 Recharge looks identical to its ICE and PHEV siblings, save for the now-obligatory body-colored grille and Recharge badging on the C-pillar. The charging port is located on the nearby front wing, there are custom alloy wheels and some new exterior paint.

Well, let them, because they changed a little with the arrival of the facelift in 2023. As before, there’s the single-motor Recharge and twin-motor Recharge Twin, but the former has now switched from front-wheel drive to – for the first time on a Volvo this side of the millennium – rear-wheel drive. oh yes

Don’t get too excited, the shift is in the name of efficiency and combined with the 235bhp, 310lb ft engine now gets 290 miles from its 69kWh battery (67kWh usable), up from 264. Meanwhile, the XC40 gets a slightly larger unit from 82 kWh (79 kWh usable), but better cell temperature management means range jumps from 270 to 334 miles.

The Recharge Twin’s engine configuration has also changed: out go the identical 201bhp engines, with 148bhp up front, 254bhp at the rear for a combined 402bhp and 494lb ft. So roughly the same power and practically the same result: 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds. hell The top speed is limited to 112 km/h, as with all Volvos.

The single motor will need 130kW of DC charging for a 10-80 per cent charge in 34 minutes, but the dual motor will now need up to 200kW for the same charge in 27 minutes. And it’s not because the hardware has changed, it’s just that Volvo now understands the equipment limitations better.

It all makes a lot of sense, unless you like ridiculously powerful twin engines, in which case it doesn’t make much sense. The XC40 is an easy car to live with on a day-to-day basis if you’re worried about going electric.

The Plus-spec trim has a keyless entry system which means you can just leave the key in your pocket and you don’t even have to press the start button, it just senses pressure from the back of the driver’s seat and is ready to go. This is the sharpest and splashiest car.

Mreview: 2022 Volvo Xc40 Recharge

The twin car offers the great performance of a family crossover, but the whole range is impressively refined. The interior is decently put together with some interesting equipment options, while the ride is smooth and sophisticated. You will be spoiled for choice with other cheaper cars.

“Like the Tesla Model 3 (and the related Polestar 2), the XC40 Recharge makes an almost irresistible case for electrification”

We loved the XC40 from the start, but had reservations about the powertrains. No longer. In electric charging guise, the XC40’s more dignified qualities – thoughtful packaging, feel and design – are enhanced by a noticeable (and let’s face it, completely unnecessary) boost in speed. Like the Tesla Model 3 (and the related Polestar 2), the XC40 Recharge makes an almost compelling case for electrification.

Sure it’s not cheap, but it’s packed with kit, and the twin-engine version has enough pace and poise on a good road to keep many more open sports cars honest. The semi-finished single engine car is simply a great everyday family car.
