Rivian R1t – Rivian – It’s December 2023 and it’s hard to listen on Cybertruck chatter, but I’ll try. I’ve previously driven the Rivian R1S SUV and the R1T pickup truck – both for a week. Last week was 2024 R1T
It’s a pickup truck like the Tesla Cybertruck And like the Cybertruck, it’s designed with off-road toughness in mind And because the Cybertruck — at least the current iteration — is expensive
Rivian R1t – Rivian
But unfortunately, it’s not Cybertruck Some would say it lacks the sharp, assertive “coolness” of the Cybertruck (via WSJ). Back me up and say that Rivian has an aesthetic advantage I prefer the R1T Except you can actually get one No waiting in line for a year or more
Cool Details About The Rivian R1t That You Might’ve Missed
What I love most about the R1T (R1S) is the marriage between beauty and beast A sense that you can do anything and go anywhere in style
So I tested the R1T It’s not the ultimate test (see this YouTube video for that), but I took it to the Mojave Desert in California where if you get stuck, you’re out of luck – since there’s no cell signal and no human civilization nearby. .
Note: What follows is a brief introductory review – not a detailed review – and I cover the features of the R1T that I used most.
Roadside Assistance: The R1T comes with the kind of technology you’d expect from a vehicle, unlike the Tesla Model Y (which I also drove a lot).
World Exclusive: We Tested The 2022 Rivian R1t And It’s The Quickest And Best Handling Truck Ever
Highway Assist is very similar to Tesla’s Autopilot The car will drive more or less on the main highway It’s not perfect (not even Tesla’s Autopilot), but I found it invaluable on long drives in the Mojave Desert, where long, endless, straight roads can test your alertness.
Highway Assist doesn’t always work when you want it to He errs on the side of caution If he encounters a situation he doesn’t recognize, he immediately shuts down and puts you back in control
Sometimes it will go to the right side of the lane, i.e. not the full center, and this can be dangerous when you pass a large truck. Because of this I had to manually turn it off a few times
Fast: It’s fast for a 7,000-pound vehicle If you need instant torque, no problem It’s not as sharp as a Model S sedan, but then again, the torque is plentiful for a heavy truck. Faster than a Mustang Shelby GT500 I have the quad-engine model (which puts the price around US$90,000) no problem. I wasn’t able to test the cheaper dual-motor variant, which costs around $74,000 and is new this year.

Charging: When you own an EV (as I do), you quickly learn to “always be charged.” No, it’s not like first-generation EVs, such as the 80-mile Chevy Spark EV (which I drove for six months in 2017), where you live in constant, bone-chilling fear that the car will die on the highway.
But the ABC rules still apply With the third generation of EVs, there is a fear of not having access to a public charger This is true in the Mojave Desert Additionally, there is a fear that some charging locations are unreliable or completely broken (Whether a public CCS fast charger would work in Santa Clarita, California, where I usually charge, is a crapshoot.)
Fortunately, an Electric America fast charging station in the small town of Mojave, California worked. And it was fast The R1T has shown a peak charging rate of over 40 mph And I got a full charge in just 30 minutes – over 300 miles from a start of about 80 miles.
(Also, I had a similar loading R1T. The owner was towing a huge trailer. The owner told me the R1T had no problem carrying large loads.)
Rivian Will Speed Up Factory Flow By Making Its Own Motors
Off Road: That’s what impressed me the most In my wasted youth, I spent an inordinate portion of my summer vacation driving a Jeep Wrangler on the soft sand at my family’s summer home in Nantucket, Massachusetts. (Parts of the island are only accessible by 4×4 vehicles.) And I mean smooth and deep In some places the sands of the Mojave Desert are similar
The R1T cut through soft sand like a hot knife through butter It gave me the confidence to go deep into the wilderness and never worry about stopping So I spent the rest of the day driving through the remote desert (see photo below). Steep climbs and sometimes at scary angles And lots of soft sand But I was never worried And despite very challenging off-road conditions in some areas, the R1T emerged unscathed at the end of the day.
Summary: What Rivian has done with its first attempt at making an electric vehicle is nothing short of amazing. When driving it, you feel that it is screwed tightly It’s quiet inside the cabin and the suspension handles potholes and poorly maintained pavement (of which Los Angeles has no shortage) with aplomb. In short, a well-equipped, high-quality car I highly recommend it based on the above experience
There is one serious downside: the price Only a small number of American car buyers can afford a $75,000 to $90,000 vehicle. This makes it an elite car only for a rich American That seems inconsistent with what Rivian wants: “We’re building a future that includes everyone.” (Although I doubt if you’re willing to make serious sacrifices, go into debt or expensive rent.)

The low-cost R2 platform will launch in 2026 That’s a long time to wait for an affordable Rivian I hope CEO RJ Scarring delivers on this promised goal
Note: Full specs of the R1T I drove: Red Canyon, quad motor, big pack R1T with Black Mountain interior and 22″ dark sport wheels.

The path of the Trans-America Trail on our 5,000+ mile journey from the coast For the 2025 model year, the Rivian debuted the second generation of the pickup, which didn’t change much on the outside, but brought significant improvements in other areas. Electric truck competitors include the Tesla Cybertruck, the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Why Rivian’s Ipo Is Worth Watching
If you don’t have room in your garage for a sports car, luxury truck, trail rig, and utility truck, buy the Rivian R1T. This incredible EV pickup truck combines the qualities of different vehicles for a unique driving experience.
Time and time again, the R1T has proven its incredible capabilities It’s an off-road beast, with air suspension and an available quad powertrain that lets it traverse difficult terrain. Back on asphalt, its acceleration and handling weigh more than three tons At the same time, the cabin’s design and materials make it a rival luxury vehicle, although the lack of physical controls for basic functions can be frustrating – even where the air vents are pointed, must be done via the touchscreen. Additionally, the Rivian’s startup status shows the raw functionality of its driver assistance features. That may change with the new 2025 Rivian Autonomous Platform architecture
As a pickup truck, the R1T will be great for some drivers and a letdown for others It’s great for weekend trips and home improvement projects; The bed, fenders and gear tunnel combine to provide generous storage space. But, like all EV trucks, range is a concern for towing or hauling loads (although the R1T feels rock solid when towing). Fortunately, the R1T has good range and charging capabilities
It may not be the ultimate pickup truck for everyone, but as a vehicle, the R1T is hard to beat.
Rivian R1t Dual Motor First Test: It’s The Same Picture
Every 2025 Rivian R1T comes with AWD, but there are three engine configurations. Dual-motor models are available with standard, large and max batteries, while quad-motor and triple-motor variants are available.
