As with Mercedes, it is closely related to the Mercedes-Benz GLC and you will definitely notice the resemblance. But it looks a bit like a generic mid-size crossover SUV that could have been designed by Renault or Hyundai, or even Saab, at least in this respect.
Is this a problem, I wonder, in a market where design is going to become a major selling point? It could be; Or maybe it’s just your current perspective. Either way, if people look at the EQC and don’t recognize it as a Mercedes until they get close enough to see the grille wire, I’m afraid it won’t really live up to its potential. We’ll see.
The EQC is a mid-size SUV that’s actually 100mm longer than the Mercedes GLC, even though it’s only a five-seater. With slightly different electric motors mounted on each axle, the car has electronically vectored four-wheel drive. The front motor has a tighter stator for better efficiency, while the rear motor has a tighter wound for higher torque. When cruising, the EQC is powered almost exclusively by the front engine.

Dig deep into the throttle, though, and with a combined 402bhp and 564lb ft on tap, the car’s driving motivation immediately shifts to the rear axle. That’s a good bit more peak torque than the Jaguar I-Pace or Audi E-tron offer, although the manufacturer claims the former is quicker than the Mercedes.
A direct comparison with these two great rivals will say a lot about this car. EQC splits the difference between them in both overall length and cost. With an 80 kWh battery, it has the lowest usable battery capacity and yet beats the bigger and heavier Audi in the battery range verified by the WLTP test (plays 259 miles 249).
Inside, the car is much easier to recognize as a modern Mercedes than without. The EQC’s cabin shares many of the modern Benz’s widescreen dual digital displays and button-studded steering wheel spokes, but some new design details, some new ambient lighting features, some EV-specific display modes and new materials are added to the cabin mix. Our test car had an elegantly styled slotted speaker grill and vents, both of which I liked, as well as a particularly soft and plush synthetic instrument panel that I could only risk underselling by describing it as made of material recycled neoprene suit
For a mid-size SUV, front-seat headroom seems pretty typical; In the back you’re a little more aware that you’re squeezed between the high cabin floor (under which the traction battery sits) and a low ceiling by class standards. With 500 liters of storage space, the boot is large but not exceptional.

The car’s driving experience has no shortage of features to distinguish it from a combustion engine SUV, and if you’ve read or driven one before, you won’t need most of them. But if there’s one thing that lifts the e-tron, iPace or Tesla Model X, it’s refinement.
Aren’t all electric vehicles supposed to run silently? Well, no, it turns out they’re not. I don’t think I’ve ever driven an electric car – or any car, for that matter – as quiet as the EQC. A careful aerodynamic design of the body helps to disable wind intrusion at speed or course, but road noise is also very good here and the car is really comfortable to drive both at low and high speeds.
Throttle response is generally excellent, though perhaps nowhere near Tesla’s synaptic level; Conductivity is excellent; And overall performance is very strong, although the Jaguar i-Pace could feel a touch stronger with heavy pedal applications.
