Jaguar I-pace – Jaguar – First reviews of the Jaguar I-PACE were released last week and there’s a lot to digest. For the sake of repetition, I won’t give away too many details, but when it was my turn to test the car in a group of 20 journalists this week, I realized I was the only one with EV experience. , So below we will talk about the I-PACE experience of a Tesla and Chevy Bolt EV owner and electric car expert.

First of all, the Jaguar I-Pace is a great car and it delivers everything that the electric powertrain promises. It flies like crazy on the track, can generate torque from a stop on 45-degree dirt roads, and most importantly, it feels great on the open road and city streets: quiet and smooth with little power. This is also a jaguar. It looks beautiful inside and out with quality components and unique design. And most of all, Jaguar should be commended for bringing this car to market before rivals Audi and Porsche introduced the e-tron and Taycan.

But despite the competition to compare the I-PACE with some of the premium electric vehicles on the road today, the nickname “Tesla Model X Killer” inevitably keeps coming up. While its 240-mile 400HP AWD electric powertrain certainly looks like an SUV, its actual body shape, interior space and ride make it feel more like a sedan.

Especially with its glass roof, the interior feels closest to the Tesla Model 3, but not too hard. While the Jaguar has nice and tasteful buttons, knobs and a small screen, the Tesla’s simple interior interface is a large touchscreen with two simple buttons on the steering wheel.

When taking into account interior space and ride height, the I-Pace is more than an inch shorter than the Chevy Bolt EV (61.3 vs. 62.8 inches). Then consider the massive 6 inches of ground clearance (which increases in off-road mode) and the large battery pack under the floor in the familiar skateboard configuration. Between the two, there is enough space for a cabin that is undoubtedly a spacious car.

If you want a comparable body type, consider this: a better-engineered, premium Subaru with 400HP of electric power.

The big thing here is that the I-PACE is different from any current Tesla model (we’ll see what the Model Y will look like next year). We wouldn’t even compare the I-PACE to a Tesla if it weren’t for its electric powertrain.

And it’s not just superficial. While Tesla is a startup with an eccentric CEO who creates excitement with crazy tweets, Jaguar is a century-old brand steeped in history. While Tesla’s interior design philosophy is simple, anticipating autonomy, Jaguar’s is full of trim, knobs and knobs.

Jaguar relies on the emerging CCS standard charging infrastructure network; On the other hand, Tesla has been continuing to establish a global network of its private stations for 5 years. The same applies for autonomy. While Tesla has its eye on its Autopilot, ask Jaguar about its self-driving plans; You’ll hear about Google’s latest announcement that its Waymo division has ordered 20,000 I-PACE.

The point is: No one will confuse the I-PACE with a Tesla unless they have new ideas and need some clickbait.

I’d like to make a few observations about the EV side of the car that I haven’t seen elsewhere.

1. The official charging speed of I-PACE is 100kW, but I am told that a future OTA software update may increase the charging to more than 110kW, closer to 120kW. It currently has the hardware capacity. While this will match Tesla’s current charging speeds, Supercharger v3 is expected to arrive later in the year and is expected to double charging rates. Porsche’s Taycan plans to offer 350kWh charging through its own CCS stations, which can charge 0-240 miles in 15 minutes.

2. Depending on the charging process, the I-PACE DC-DC converter discharges 250A at 12 volts from the larger 90kWh battery; This means you can plug a 3kW inverter into a 12V battery and run your home with it. You could also theoretically give someone the ability to jump into an internal combustion fuel vehicle. Or like 1000 jumps.

3. Jaguar won’t offer vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid services this year, but an engineer I spoke to said they’re working on such things and may have something to announce later. Could. 6. The 90 kWh battery pack is protected from the road by a thin aluminum casing of just 7 mm. I’ve been told this has been increased, but I wonder if the I-Pace will have the same battery breakdown problem when highway debris falls under the car. As you may recall, Tesla added a titanium plate to the bottom to prevent cracks, and it really did look like it was pushing cinder blocks at highway speeds.

7. The I-PACE is currently EPA tested for range, but Jaguar thinks it will get more than the 240 miles it currently offers. It’s not clear by how much, but by comparison, the larger, heavier (but less-dragging) Model X 90D tops out at 255. The person I spoke to said 245-250 wouldn’t be a surprise.

8. The silence around charging infrastructure and options at the event was deafening. Jaguar’s official statement is that dealers will have at least L2 chargers (7.2kW or 240V 32A estimated but cannot be confirmed). In my opinion, this is unacceptable. Requiring dealers to install 100 kW DC fast chargers will really go a long way in showing customers how they can add mileage to EVs faster, while also creating an immediate US charging network for a new customer base.

Since charging is the primary concern for most people with an EV, we didn’t see any strange-looking plugs. The reason given was that European spark plugs were different from those in North America and China, but when EU reviews of the I-PACE were examined, none showed any spark plug designation. I hope charging training is given to dealers, otherwise Jaguar will have problems.

9. The I-Pace charges 100% daily, unlike the Tesla, which charges around 90% on a daily basis. This allows Tesla to achieve higher battery percentages without excessive battery loss during trips. I wonder if Jaguar doesn’t overcharge its batteries, or whether LG’s lithium pack design requires less charging to maintain capacity for longer periods of time.

The Jaguar I-Pace is an incredible, luxurious vehicle that delivers on all the promise of electric vehicles as legacy automakers adapt to the new reality. But it’s not perfect yet, and issues like long-range charging, high cost, and limited availability need to be addressed. However, as I said at the beginning, electrification has its own advantages for this car:
