Honda Clarity Review: This Midsize Plug In Hybrid Could Be Your Only Car
It features a long and thoughtful compilation of its 2017 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid with pictures.
He owns a 2012 Chevrolet Volt range electric car and traded in the old family minivan for the new Clarity Plug-in.
Echoing Honda’s position as a five-seater midsize sedan that competes with small compact hatchbacks, it is seen as an excellent entry into the segment.
His entire post is worth reading in its entirety; But I will extract his excerpts to give you a taste of his magazine.

It’s a bigger car [than the Volt], and a longer interior foot and rear seat room make the Clarity PHEV a better choice for a passenger car (more than 2 people).
The Volt offers a little more EV drive, which provides the driver with information about the vehicle’s performance, such as an MPGe rating. Honda is clearly designed to drive without the driver having to think about the details.
I am very happy with my car purchase and hope to drive it for many years. It has all the boxes I want in a car. Space for 5 storage units; EV mileage and gas efficiency check out.
We’re curious about Honda’s intentions for the car, although the Viking’s assessment of the car is relative to us.

The company has repeatedly said it expects to sell 75,000 Clarity models of all variants over the four-year period from 2018 to 2021.
Most of these are plug-in hybrids, with a small number of hydrogen fuel cells and 93-mile electric battery versions.
Even Honda has cracked the code on how it markets plug-in hybrids. It seems to dominate the potential market.
Still, At least one first owner was impressed. For the first time in seven years, the Chevrolet Volt is a strong contender.

I agree to receive emails from Green Car Reports. I understand that I can cancel at any time. Privacy policy. I bought my 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid in February 2018 (I wrote this over five months ago). I have already accumulated more than 10 thousand kilometers on my odometer. He drives a lot. enter immediately; Why did you buy a new car in the first place? Why the Honda Clarity PHEV?
The previous car was draining ~0.5 L of oil per week towards the end of its time with me. So, to be clear, it’s quite a pinch. And so began my surprisingly short search for a new vehicle. I knew I wanted something with an electric range and preferably something fuel efficient and reliable. My dream car is a Tesla Model 3; However, given how unreliable my current car is, I can’t exactly wait in line.
Despite working in the alt-fuel world. Fateful Friday (like Manic Monday, but less catchy) never heard of a Honda Clarity. I was planning on making my new car decision the week after discovering my Clarity, and luckily, Fortunately, a local dealer had the Clarity in stock – they jumped at the chance to let me test drive the car.
From the moment I saw the car, I was amazed. I’m used to the futuristic look of other mainstream hybrids (I’m looking at you, Prius); Honda has certainly decided on some pretty neat design differences, but the Clarity has a significantly lower shock factor than the Prius. The most notable design choice is the covered rear tires, which allow the Clarity to slide more easily through the air. Mainly, the exterior of the Clarity is very much in line with the design of the new Honda Accords and Civics.

As an interesting note, some of the reviews I found online referred to the Clarity as the best looking car of the year. Prefer. This is in sharp contrast to all the times I have been parked at my local car chargers by foreigners who wanted to know more about EVs and especially my car, all raving about how good the car is. Therefore, “Different” may be an appropriate way to describe the clarity design.
Sitting in the car, I feel very familiar with the “conventional” cars I’ve driven all my life (except this time, the car isn’t as old as me…). Inside the vehicle, two notable differences are the paddle selectors on the steering column (used to control the force of its regenerative braking) and the gear selection system, which are push (and pull) buttons instead of levers.
The interior is comfortable and surprisingly spacious. The gear selector is suspended on a bridge for a base with two USB charging ports (one provides 1.5A and the other 1.0A) and a standard power socket in most cars (there is a second socket of power behind the center console for rear passengers). During my daily commute, this shelf holds my purse, phone AND makes a wonderful place for a notebook.
The car is divided into two models: Base and Touring. Touring trim gets Honda Satellite Navigation (although Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available on the Base Trim); full leather seats; Crucially, the leather steering wheel and power seats (fob-based keys with memory settings); There is no performance difference between the two trims – electric range; fuel economy The safety features and engine/motor power of both trims are identical.

I admit I was a bit annoyed by the process of opening the car. Pressing the Start button turns on the dash and touchscreen, and even produces a soothing boot-up sound that I suspect was added to satisfy the motor part of the brain. When I started the car for the first time since realizing this sound, all I heard was silence. Like a 90’s sitcom. I looked at the salesman in the passenger seat with a naive and bewildered look on my face and asked him if the car was open. . . Of course there was.
Having never driven a hybrid or electric car, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Will it be as lethargic as I’d expect from the stories I’ve heard about hybrids? Or will it zip like I expected from the stories I’ve heard about EVs?
To my satisfaction, the car runs quite well. The Clarity won’t push you into your seat like a Tesla S, but it will provide enough acceleration if you need it. Its Sport Mode dramatically increases throttle responsiveness, making the Clarity an exciting car to drive.
I’m also surprised by the paddle selectors for regenerative braking. The process of using them became second nature very quickly, and at the end of my short test drive, I considered using them a great victory without having to actively think about them.
Honda Clarity Plug In Hybrid Specs, Trims & Colors
One of the qualities that concerns me most in a vehicle is visibility while driving, and this is where the Clarity excels (and hence the name…). The rear window isn’t very large, but the Clarity has a window through the trunk that adds valuable visibility.
The last thing I noticed during my first test drive was the steering wheel itself. It may sound silly, but the guide makes sense.
. It has little play and I find it provides a really comfortable confidence while driving that is hard to explain. It adds a sense of purpose to any setup when driving, which I love.
